DENVER—The president of Afghanistan has persuaded two Coloradans in Congress that he’s committed to helping the American effort to defeat the Taliban in his country.
President Hamid Karzai met last weekend with Democratic Reps. John Salazar and Betsy Markey, who visited Afghanistan with Montana Sen. Max Baucus.
Markey and Salazar briefed reporters Tuesday. Salazar described Karzai as “totally committed to working with America.” That’s despite signals from Karzai and other Afghani officials criticizing foreign interference.
Salazar said Karzai assured him that comments Karzai might join the Taliban were “taken out of context.”
Both lawmakers deferred to the judgment of U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal.
