PHILADELPHIA — Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf.
Rollins, the 2007 NL MVP, was injured during warm-ups before Monday’s game against the Nationals. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.
“It’s unfortunate,” Rollins said Wednesday. “From Monday to (Wednesday), it’s much better. I thought it was torn.”
Juan Castro will replace Rollins at shortstop.
Angels put Fuentes on DL
NEW YORK — Angels closer Brian Fuentes was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained back. The move was made retroactive to April 6.
Fuentes, who hasn’t pitched since opening day, said he tweaked his back while lifting weights last week.
“It was just kind of a freak thing,” Fuentes said. “It feels significantly better now.”
Fernando Rodney will assume closing duties in Fuentes’ absence.
