CHSAA
Board of control meeting
This ought to be a dandy, at least as far meetings go. In a sign of the times, cost-cutting and saving a few bucks are on the docket today at the Red Lion Hotel-Denver Southeast.
The CHSAA executive committee proposed an across-the-board 10 percent reduction of all regular-season contests except football. If money talks — and it does — this has a pretty good chance of passing, but for the sake of the student-athletes, we kind of hope it doesn’t.
BASEBALL
Let’s play two
Ernie Banks would have loved Saturdays in Colorado. The weekly homage to “Mr. Cub” has double-dips happening all over the place, and none better than the Metropolitan League’s Holy Family-Faith Christian games.
The Tigers (10-1), ranked No. 2 in the latest Denver Post/9News Class 3A poll, will likely throw Josh Tinnon and Evan Genders at the No. 3 Eagles (11-1) and a lineup that is hitting at a nifty clip.
Staying in Class 3A, where — aside from Eaton — just two other undefeated teams remain: the Western Slope’s No. 4 Cedaredge (9-0) and pitcher Chaunce Lindley, as well as No. 8 Roaring Fork (8-0). The Bruins will be at Basalt for two, and the Rams will travel to Olathe for a double-header.
GIRLS TENNIS
Cherry Creek tourney
When you think high school tennis in Colorado, you automatically think Cherry Creek, or at least you should. The kings and queens of the court have won 63 state titles between them since 1972, and a victory at their prestigious tournament is always a notch in one’s belt.
The host Bruins, led by No. 1 singles player Caroline Schnell, would love nothing more than to make a statement to the rest of the state that they are again as formidable as ever. Play starts Friday morning at 8 a.m. The finals will go Saturday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Kickin’ in the Springs
Colorado Springs soccer for more than a decade belonged to Liberty and coach Mike Goyden. The times they are a changin’, and the depth of the field across the board from Class 5A Air Academy to 3A’s The Classical Academy, St. Mary’s and Manitou Springs is outstanding.
Saturday gives us the aforementioned 5A Kadets, currently ranked No. 3, hosting No. 1 Arapahoe at 5 p.m. In Class 4A, top-ranked Lewis- Palmer will play Greeley West at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City today and will travel to Mitchell on Saturday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Angels playing heavenly
Denver East, fresh off a 15-14 victory Tuesday night over defending champion Air Academy, is currently ranked No. 2 at 8-0.
Coming up next for the Angels is St. Mary’s Academy on Friday. They then visit Thompson Valley on Wednesday. The Eagles, made up of players not just from Loveland but also Fort Collins, are 7-1 and legitimate contenders.
