GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The U.S. Marshals arrested a man for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.

Marshals arrested 39-year-old Shane Lee Allen in Grand Junction Tuesday under a federal law designed to prevent sex offenders from avoiding detection by moving from state to state. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Allen served a nine year sentence in New Mexico for sexual contact and attempted penetration of a child, and also had another sexual assault conviction in Colorado.

Authorities say Allen failed to register as a sex offender after moving to Colorado from Montana in September. Allen’s attorney Michele Devlin declined to comment.

Allen remained in custody Friday.
