It was a hot and sweaty night at last Wednesday when kicked off with a rather sleepy and depressing tale about fallen nations and innocence destroyed.
However, when Amanda Shires, the singer and fiddle player for , took to the stage to showcase her solo work, the crowd knew the night was going to be special. Blending a melodious voice with sparse and emotional arrangements, Shires got the crowd’s attention. also warmed up the crowd with a rowdy, eclectic, percussion-driven mix that must have included 10 musicians in the world’s most interesting marching band. The crowd was now sweaty, more than a little boozy and ready for the main attraction.
Although missing one guitar player, Texas act Thrift Store Cowboys took the stage and delivered an intense performance of slow-driving Southern sounds punctuated with flourishing fiddle arrangements. Itap easy to see why these guys have shared the stage with bands like DeVotchKa and Old 97’s. Letap hope the next time they come back to Denver they are on a bigger stage of their own. — Allen Klosowski
