A GOP lawmaker wants to tap lottery funds that now go to help buy land for public parks and instead use the money for public schools.

Voters would have to approve the plan from Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg, R-Sterling, to allow the use of funds that now go to Great Outdoors Colorado. In Sonnenberg’s proposal, which would need a two-thirds vote of the legislature to be placed on the November ballot, lawmakers could divert the lottery proceeds only in a year with a fiscal emergency.

Under a constitutional amendment voters approved in 1992, the Great Outdoors Colorado fund gets about $55 million a year.
