DENVER—A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a Douglas, Wyo., man accused of taking a 14-year-old family friend to Chicago and sexually assaulting him.

William J. Batton was sentenced to 30 years in prison after his conviction on a count of interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in illegal sexual acts.

He argued that the trial judge shouldn’t have allowed jurors to hear about a 1995 conviction in a sex assault on another boy or an expert’s testimony about how sex offenders recruit victims. He also argued the trial judge gave improper jury instructions.

A three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday disagreed with Batton and affirmed his conviction.
