DENVER—Jorge Cantu will have to wait a day before trying to extend his 20-game hitting streak.
Rain washed out Friday night’s game between the Florida and Colorado, forcing the Marlins’ Cantu to put his swing on hold.
That’s alright with Cantu, who says patience has been a key part of the streak.
“I’ve seen all kinds of pitches, but you have to be patient,” he said. “You have to wait for the right pitch.”
Cantu finished the 2009 season with hits in each of his last four games, and has hit safely in all 16 this season—the longest to open a season since Pittsburgh’s Nate McLouth hit safely in the first 19 games in 2008.
“I’m going back to my roots,” Cantu said. “See the ball and hit the ball. That’s all I’ve been doing.”
The 20-game streak is the longest by a Marlins player since Kevin Millar had a 25-game stretch in 2002.
Cantu will get a chance to add two games to his streak on Saturday when the teams play a doubleheader to make up the rainout. The first game is set to start at 3:05 p.m. MDT. The second game will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
The rainout Friday was baseball’s first this season. Not since 1985 had it gone this long into a season without losing a game to inclement weather.
