COLUMBUS, Ohio — Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute and the Columbus Crew went to beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Saturday night in a matchup of the last two Major League Soccer champions.

Salt Lake upset the Crew in the playoffs last year en route to its first MLS Cup, but went 34 minutes without a shot at one point and didn’t mount an attack until William Hesmer was forced to stop Nelson Gonzalez in the 84th minute. That was followed by a kick save on Robbie Findley’s breakaway four minutes later.

Schelotto scored his third goal after Real Salt Lake defender Robbie Russell knocked down Robbie Rogers on the left side of the box.

Columbus improved to 2-0-1 this season and Real Salt Lake dropped to 1-3-1.
