Flatirons Solutions, an engineering firm based in Boulder, and a Washington, D.C.-based company have been awarded a $280 million contract for work on a new air-traffic-control system.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Flatirons and CSSI will do engineering work on NextGen, a GPS satellite-based system that will replace the current radar technology.

The contract announced Wednesday is the first of as many as six in the $7 billion program called System Engineering 2020.
