WASHINGTON — Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., sponsored legislation that passed the House unanimously Wednesday to stop the GOP tactic of sending fundraising letters that appear to be from the Census Bureau. The bill went to the Senate.
A new law requires nongovernment mailings using the word “census” on an envelope to have a disclaimer. It was passed after the RNC used the word “census” on the envelope of a January mailing.
The RNC skirted the law in a new mailing that had the word visible through a plastic window. Issa’s bill extends the restrictions to any visible use of the word “census.”
