COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Police say a man who robbed a Colorado Springs bank got away after a botched carjacking.

Police say the armed robber shot at a passing SUV and abandoned a bag of cash after a pack of red dye exploded inside. Officers used dogs to search fields and nearby neighborhoods for the suspect Friday, but didn’t immediately find him.

There were no reports of injuries.

Police Sgt. Darrin Abbink says a man entered a Key Bank at 9:42 a.m. and demanded cash while holding a handgun. He fled with a bag of cash and demanded that a woman and a boy in a sport utility vehicle pulling into a shopping center get out.

The woman hit the gas and got away.
