While the weather in Denver can be quite variable throughout the year, May can feature almost any type of weather event.

The average date of the last freeze in Denver is May 5, but a late-season frost can hamper plant growth. The latest freeze for Denver is June 8.

Though chilly mornings are possible, afternoon temperatures in the 80s are common, and at times the mercury can climb into the 90s.

May is the traditional start to the severe weather season through the area.

Violent thunderstorms, with large hail and tornadoes, are possible. These severe storms occur when moisture from the Gulf of Mexico moves into Colorado and collides with cold fronts still moving into the region from either Canada or the Pacific Northwest.

On average, precipitation falls once every three days through the month, making May the wettest month of the year.

May and November have the lowest percentage of possible sunshine.

Although snow is nearly nonexistent in many of the past 12 years, May averages 1.3 inches of the white stuff.
