DENVER—The House approved a bill to create a committee this summer that could work with the federal government to resolve complaints between immigrant sheepherders and their employers.
Rep. Daniel Kagan, a Denver Democrat, says the 11-member task force will review work conditions and complaint procedures for sheepherders who allege they’re being mistreated.
Immigrant advocacy groups complain that the sheepherders often work as many as 90 hours a week for as little as $600 a month and in small, shabby trailers.
The bill passed Monday now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Lawmakers have rejected attempts to set wages and hours in the face of opposition from wool growers and cattle ranchers.
