A legislative committee killed a bill Monday that defined reasonable compensation for estate administrators and other fiduciaries and could have permitted them to charge a percentage of an estate for their services.

Co-sponsor Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver, asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to postpone the bill indefinitely. He said the bill, which was written by lawyers handling wills and trusts and passed the House, “has become somewhat controversial and taken on a life of its own” with opponents who had raised various objections about probate court appointees.

The judiciary committee approved a bill that would require mandatory jail time for drunken drivers convicted of two or more offenses.

The bill requires a minimum 10-day jail sentence for any driver convicted of two offenses within five years, and 60 days for third and subsequent offenses, but would allow work release if the offender was employed. It imposes a two-year probation period and mandatory treatment for repeat offenders. David Olinger, The Denver Post
