A ski-industry group’s preliminary report says visits to U.S. ski resorts rose 4.2 percent this past season, to 59.7 million, compared with a year earlier.

The Lakewood-based National Ski Areas Association said Tuesday that preliminary figures show the 2009-10 season was the second-best on record, after 60.5 million visits in the 2007-08 season.

A visit is one person skiing or snowboarding one day. The figures, based on the Kottke National End of Season Survey, will be updated in July.
