Strong winds are expected in advance of a cold front scheduled to arrive tonight in northeast Colorado. Wind gusts will be the strongest on the west side of town, with gusts above 30 mph near downtown Denver.

Westerly winds will be sustained at 15 to 30 mph throughout most of the day. High-profile vehicles need to exercise extreme caution, especially when traveling up to the mountains.

At Denver International Airport, strong west winds slowed departures of aircraft this morning.

The National Weather Service reported 39-mph wind with gusts of 55 mph at DIA.

But by this afternoon DIA spokesman Jeff Green told The Denver Post the departure congestion due to high winds has eased. “It is fluctuating depending on the wind,” he said. “As the sun gets lower, the winds are dropping.”

While the winds are disrupting some travel and some outdoor activities today, they will also help warm temperatures significantly during the afternoon. Most locations along the Front Range will be in the middle to upper 70s for afternoon highs.

Once the weak cool front arrives, settling into northeast Colorado late tonight, winds will begin to subside and cooler air will settle back into the forecast.

Look for breezy conditions tonight and highs back in the 60s by Wednesday.

Denver Post staff writer Ann Schrader contributed to this report.
