Broomfield-based Level 3 Communications Inc. said its first-quarter loss widened as the company took a $54 million debt-extinguishment charge and said its revenue declined Thursday.

Level 3, which has posted five straight quarterly losses, reported a loss of $238 million, or 14 cents a share, from a loss of $132 million, or 8 cents, a year earlier. Revenue dropped 7.1 percent to $910 million.
