Unbeaten and largely unchallenged, Lewis-Palmer will be the unquestioned favorite when the Class 4A girls soccer playoffs kick off Tuesday.
By virtue of handling everything the regular season threw their way, the Rangers (15-0-0) claimed the top overall seed when the Colorado High School Activities Association unveiled the Class 4A bracket on Sunday. The Rangers host No. 32 Skyview (4-7-1), though a time is still to be determined. (.)
The Rangers won 11 games by four goals or more, including four 10-0 victories. Their closest call came in a 3-2 win over Cheyenne Mountain on April 29, a game that came down to the final minute.
Lewis-Palmer has four girls with 10 goals or more — Noelle and Virginia Limbird, Kourtney Guetlein, Erika Balk and Shelby Howard — and starting goalkeeper Brandi Arsenault has surrendered just five goals all season.
In a mild surprise, Valor Christian (13-1-0) claimed the second seed over Cheyenne Mountain, which is No. 3. Cheyenne Mountain finished the season 14-1-0, it’s lone loss coming to Lewis-Palmer.
Valor Christian strung together eight wins to close the regular season, out-scoring opponents a combined 58-0 since a 3-1 loss to Ponderosa on March 20. The Eagles host No. 31 Denver North (6-6-1).
Cheyenne Mountain (14-1-0) will host No. 30 Pueblo County (7-7-1).
Wheat Ridge (12-1-2) is the No. 4 seed and hosts No. 29 Montrose (8-7-0).
The top eight is rounded out by No. 5 Fossil Ridge (13-1-1), No. 6 Broomfield (13-2-0), No. 7 Golden (13-3-1) and No. 8 Silver Creek (12-3-0).
Among the better first-round matchups are No. 17 Evergreen (11-4-0) at No. 16 Palisade (11-3-1), No. 18 Pueblo Centennial (10-3-0) at No. 15 Castle View (10-4-0) and No. 19 Niwot (9-5-1) at No. 14 Canon City (12-2-1).
The second round will be May 15 with the quarterfinals May 19 and the semifinals May 22. The 3A final is 5 p.m. on May 26 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
