The second-seeded Fairview Knights knew better than to look past Ralston Valley in the first round of the Class 5A state soccer playoffs.

The No. 31 Mustangs might have squeaked into the postseason as the last qualifier from the Jeffco League. But both FHS coach Jeremy Pinard and Ralston Valley coach Stephanie Carpenter were surprised when the Mustangs drew such a low seed after coming out of such a tough conference.

The Knights’ humility proved valuable.

With visions of a potential rematch against defending state champion Chatfield teasing them in the second round, the Knights blanked Ralston Valley 3-0 in cold, rainy conditions at FHS on Tuesday evening.
