NEW YORK — New York City moved Friday to revoke the cab licenses of 633 taxi drivers who it said routinely charged customers higher, out-of-town rates for trips within the five boroughs.
The disciplinary action stems from an investigation by the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. The commission said that a total of 21,819 drivers gouged riders by charging the higher rates, usually about $4 or $5 more, 286,000 times, which the commission said cost passengers an estimated $1.1 million.
