BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder Valley School District officials are looking for a third-party mediator after contract negotiations stalled with its teachers for the second year in a row.

Superintendent Chris King says school officials want to seek mediation sooner rather than later because they want to resolve differences with the teachers’ union quickly.

King says negotiations stalled after the district asked teachers to either take a 2 percent pay cut or agree to a salary freeze to keep class sizes down and retain teachers. Teacher’s union President Melissa Tingley says the district is not considering all options. The union wants a 1 percent pay raise for teachers.

The district is cutting its budget because Gov. Bill Ritter recommended reductions to K-12 funding this year.
