FORT COLLINS, Colo.—It’s a red light for “green” parking spaces Fort Collins.

City officials are removing a sign designating four downtown parking spaces for fuel-efficient vehicles. The sign was installed in November with the goal of supporting the city’s climate action plan and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But city officials say public feedback on the special parking area was overwhelmingly negative. Critics complained that city government was telling people what kind of vehicles to drive.

The parking designation wasn’t enforceable under the current parking code, but was intended to be a tool to encourage the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Parking services manager Randy Hensley says Fort Collins doesn’t appear to be ready for something like that yet.
