Tickets for The Denver Post’s annual Old West style train ride to Cheyenne Frontier Days go on sale today. This year’s run, the 19th, is scheduled to leave at 7 a.m. July 24 and return at 8:30 p.m.
Begun in 1908, the popular all-day outing was brought back in 1992, after a 22-year hiatus, when the paper celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Since then, the Frontier Days train has carried hundreds of passengers yearly on a rare trip behind a steam-powered locomotive.
Pulling this year’s 17-car train is the Union Pacific’s circa 1944 engine 844, the last steam locomotive built for the railroad. Used on high-speed passenger trains until its retirement to special service in 1960, 844 is capable of speeds up to 70 mph.
Reserved-seat tickets are $265, which includes a round-trip ride aboard the UP’s 1950s-era passenger cars; a continental breakfast and light supper on board; the Frontier Days parade through downtown Cheyenne; a private catered barbecue lunch; plus prime seats for the rodeo.
The Hi-Beams play Western tunes for dancing in a converted baggage car.
Last year’s trip sold out in a record three hours.
