Bonny Reservoir and the surrounding state park facilities have for years been an early-season attraction for fishermen, boaters and campers. Though the scene has changed with a recent low-water year, the reservoir remains a popular destination for the Memorial Day weekend.

Through lower usage and budget cuts, some cutbacks in state park services have been made. The number of available camping spaces has been cut from 190 to 103. The Wagon Wheel and Foster Grove campgrounds remain open, but the East Beach and North Cove areas have been permanently closed. Wagon Wheel sites can be reserved in advance; Foster Grove has 16 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Inspections are not required to launch in-state boats, but random checks may be conducted. The inspection station is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday through Tuesday through Labor Day.

There is heavy road construction on U.S. 385 between Idalia and the state park, so Denver traffic is advised to stay on Interstate 70 to Burlington, then go north on 385 instead of getting off on U.S. 36 at Byers.

For conditions updates, visit and proceed to the Bonny Reservoir link or call 970-354-7306.
