WILMINGTON, N.C. — University of Denver freshman Kimberly Kim shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday and was tied for 30th after the first round of the NCAA championships at the Country Club of Landfall.

After opening with a double bogey, Kim carded three birdies along with two bogeys the rest of the round.

Kim, participating as an individual, was six strokes behind tournament leaders Jennifer Johnson (Arizona State), Jennifer Song (Southern California) and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (Purdue), who shot 5-under 67s.

DU women’s coach Sammie Chergo said Kim did a nice job of fighting jitters.

“Both (associate coach) Lindsay Hulwick and I are happy with how she battled back (Tuesday),” Chergo said. “She is showing great maturity and poise as a freshman.”
