Metro State men’s basketball coach Brannon Hays resigned to “prepare for a career advancement,” the Denver school announced Tuesday. Hays led the Roadrunners to a 24-7 record last season and a 98-27 record overall in his four seasons, including a 61-15 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. His teams won three RMAC Tournament titles.
“I want to thank Brannon for his dedication to our program,” Metro State athletic director Joan McDermott said. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Texas A&M has another Kubiak.
Texas A&M hired former Colorado State safety Klint Kubiak as an assistant football coach. Kubiak, 23, will be the Aggies’ defensive quality control coach.
As an undrafted rookie, Kubiak had an NFL tryout with the Washington Redskins and coach Mike Shan- ahan during a minicamp this month.
Kubiak’s father, Gary, was a star quarterback at Texas A&M before playing for the Broncos. He coaches the Houston Texans.

Forwards Nic Johnson of the Denver Barbarians and Leonard Peters of the Gentlemen of Aspen were among the 29 players named to the U.S. men’s national rugby team player pool for the Churchill Cup tournament.
Most of the U.S. team will assemble May 30 in Glendale, which will host international Churchill Cup action at Infinity Park on June 5, June 9 and June 13.
Colorado Christian golfer opens with an 81.
Jon Klingensmith of Colorado Christian was tied for 63rd after shooting a 9-over-par 81 in the first round of the NCAA Division II men’s golf championships at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. Klingensmith, a junior from Wheat Ridge, qualified as an individual.

Catherine Jimenez of Holy Trinity Academy in Trinidad signed to play women’s basketball next season at Colorado Mines.
Jimenez, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds in her senior season and was named the District 6 player of the year in Class 1A.
