MINNEAPOLIS — Anthony Hauser, the father of Daniel Hauser, the Minnesota boy who went on the run last year to avoid treatment for cancer, is battling leukemia — and is refusing chemotherapy himself.

“How much more can one family take?” said Hauser family spokesman Dan Zwakman.

Daniel Hauser, then 13, spent a week on the run with his mother last spring in a case that became a national sensation. His family had refused to allow him to undergo chemotherapy to treat his Hodgkin’s lymphoma, citing medical and religious objections.

That caused the Brown County, Minn., attorney to seek court intervention and a judge ordered him to undergo treatment.

He finished the treatment in September, and “Danny’s doing great,” Zwakman said.

Anthony Hauser’s leukemia “is very rare and very aggressive, and he’s decided to go the natural route,” Zwakman said.

That means Hauser, 55, has been undergoing blood transfusions but won’t accept chemotherapy treatments, he said.

Hauser has taken a medical leave from his job, Zwakman said. He and his wife, Colleen, are the parents of a baby girl, born about two months ago, Zwakman said.
