Denver-based Slaterpaull Architects has purchased Engine House No. 5, a former fire station at 19th and Market streets, from the city to use as its corporate headquarters.

“Purchasing Engine House No. 5 gives us an opportunity to utilize our expertise to design a highly sustainable, green building for our own use and contribute to the historic fabric of our community at the same time,” said Jamie Pedler, the firm’s president and chief financial officer.

Slaterpaull will blend the historic character of the fire station with a flexible, sustainable design and an extensive interior and exterior restoration based on historic photos of the building. Slaterpaull’s goal is to reach LEED platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Construction is scheduled to begin in June by Spectrum General Contractors.

The 13,000-square-foot building was constructed in 1922 and has remained in continuous use since then. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
