ASPEN, Colo.—City officials in the mountain resort of Aspen are looking at ways to help residents who can’t afford bear-resistant trash cans that will be mandatory starting June 1.
A new law requires the cans, which can cost hundreds of dollars, in attempts to reduce conflicts between black bears and people.
Local and state wildlife officers killed 20 bears in the area last year after the animals threatened people. Other bears were relocated.
Bears are attracted by garbage and food left outside and wildlife officers have campaigned to get people to keep trash cans inside or use ones designed to keep bears out. The new city ordinance allows officers to impose heavy fines on repeat violators.
