GREELEY, Colo.—A 27-year-old Greeley man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed his friend.
A jury last month convicted Jonathan Mullins of vehicular homicide after the car he was driving crashed just outside Greeley in April of 2009 and killed 26-year-old Shannon Paul Hottel.
Investigators initially couldn’t tell who was driving and Mullins refused to talk, but tests found his DNA in blood on the driver’s air bag and Hottel’s blood on the passenger air bag.
Weld District Court Judge Gilbert Gutierrez sentenced Mullins Friday to 16 years, despite his pleas from him and his family for mercy.
Authorities noted Mullins had a past felony conviction and was on probation at the time of the crash.
