MADRID — Inter Milan won the European soccer title for the first time in 45 years, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 on Saturday night on two goals by Diego Milito in the first Champions League final played on a weekend.
Milito scored in the 35th and 70th minutes at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to give Inter its third European title, following back-to-back wins in 1964-65. Inter completed an Italian treble following victories in Serie A and the Italian Cup.
“This is a joy I’ve never experienced,” said Milito, who finished the season with 30 goals. “Football always gives the chance for redemption. I always fought hard and tried to give my all.”
Jose Mourinho became the third coach to win the European title with two clubs following a championship with FC Porto in 2004.
• Abby Wambach scored two goals and assisted on another to guide the United States to a 4-0 victory over Germany in an international friendly in Cleveland.
• Chris Wondolowski scored and Joe Cannon picked up his fourth straight shutout and fifth in six games to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 MLS victory over the host Seattle Sounders.
• In other MLS action, Chad Barrett‘s goal lifted host Toronto FC over New England 1-0.
Danny Cruz and Dominic Oduro scored goals to power the host Houston Dynamo to a 2-0 win over D.C. United; Real Salt Lake edged host Chivas USA 2-1.
Spieth in Nelson contention
IRVING, Texas — Jordan Spieth, a 16-year-old high school junior, continued to defy the expectations of everyone but himself, shooting a 3-under-par 67 to move solidly into contention going into the final round of the Byron Nelson Championship.
Spieth’s best round yet left him tied for seventh, six shots behind leader Jason Day. Day shot a 67 to take the lead.
• Top-ranked Jiyai Shin knocked out Michelle Wie in the Sybase Match Play Championship quarterfinals in Gladstone, N.J., winning 2 and 1.
Shin will play Sun Young Yoo, a 2-and-1 winner over fourth-seeded Yani Tseng, in the semifinals today. In the other quarterfinals, 10th-seeded Angela Stanford beat Catriona Matthew 5 and 3, and No. 30 Amy Yang edged Haeji Kang 1-up.

• Tony Martin of HTC-Columbia won the windy seventh stage of the Tour of California, a 21-mile individual time trial, in 41 minutes, 41 seconds in Los Angeles. Teammate Michael Rogers finished second, but retained the overall lead.
• Vincenzo Nibali won the first mountain stage in the Giro d’Italia by attacking on a descent, while David Arroyo Duran of Spain moved into the overall lead in Asolo, Italy.
