Ovarian-cancer screening shows promise in study

Doctors may be getting closer to having a way to screen healthy women for signs of ovarian cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. The method tests blood for a protein that often is high in women with ovarian tumors. Women with high scores are then given ultrasound exams and, if a problem is found, surgery to look for cancer. Researchers tested the method in more than 3,000 American women. Only eight needed to have an operation, and three of them turned out to have tumors. The screening approach needs more testing before it goes into wide use. A bigger study is underway now in England.

Teal ribbon walk

The Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance hosts its first Teal Ribbon Run/Walk with a 5K at 8 a.m. and a 1K family walk at 9:30 a.m. June 5. The alliance is celebrating its fifth anniversary as a nonprofit providing advocacy, education and support for ovarian cancer patients, one of the most underdiagnosed and lethal of gynecological cancers. There is no one test for women, and ovarian cancer is not detected in a pap smear. Participants can support the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance by registering for the event, making a donation or by raising pledges as part of a team or individually, at Boulder Running Co., Runners Roost and Outdoor Divas locations, or at ; 1-800-428-0642
