No, you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to enjoy the 2010 ARCS Galaeven though there were a couple of them in the room.
Former astronaut Ronald Sega put technical jargon aside and charmed his audience with color slides and a payload of personal anecdotes from his trips into outer space aboard the space shuttles Discovery and Atlantis in 1994 and 1996, respectively.
Now the Woodward professor of systems engineering at Colorado State University, Sega was at the gala to be honored for scientific achievement by the Colorado chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists.
The dinner event was chaired by past president Sherrye Berger, emceed by CBS 4 meterologist Dave Aguilera and held at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Proceeds go to the chapter’s scholarship fund.
Special guests included Bart Snyder, whose grandfather, Alan Shepard, was the first American in space and the fifth person to walk on the moon; Mary Snitch, the director of programs, space systems and operations for NASA and the national president of ARCS; retired Lockheed Martin president Peter Teets; and Clayton Bargsten, an engineering physics major at CSU who spoke on behalf of the 32 college students whose science, medicine and engineering educations are being funded by ARCS scholarships.
