The Avalanche signed defense prospects Joel Chouinard and Jonas Holos to entry-level contracts. Both were chosen in the sixth round of the NHL’s 2008 draft.
Chouinard, 20, led Quebec Major Junior Hockey League defensemen with 23 goals last season. He had 68 points in 65 games for the Victoriaville Tigres.
Holos, from Sarpsborg, Norway, played the past two seasons with Farjestads BK of the Swedish Elite League. The Avs’ first draft choice from Norway had one goal and 13 assists in 51 games last season. This year, the 22-year-old Holos represented Norway at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and at the world championships in Germany.
Sun Belt tournaments coming to Denver.
The University of Denver will host the 2012-13 Sun Belt Conference men’s and women’s tennis championships. The announcement was made Wednesday at the conference’s annual meetings in Sandestin, Fla.
DU’s Schnoy advances in straight sets.
DU tennis player Ute Schnoy won her first match at the NCAA women’s singles championships in Athens, Ga., defeating Selma Babic of Long Island 6-2, 6-1.
Schnoy, a senior from Germany, plays Hilary Barte of Stanford in the singles round of 32 today. Schnoy also will represent the Pioneers in doubles with Sophia Bergner, a freshman from Germany. They play Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia of Miami in the doubles round of 32 today.
CU signs golfer.
Australian golfer Patrick Wilson signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Colorado men’s team. Wilson is the No. 15-ranked amateur in Australia. Golfweek magazine lists him as the No. 98-ranked amateur in the world.
