Supporters of a bill that would allow gays to serve openly in the military worked on Wednesday to marshal the political support needed to end the 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, but the outcome was in doubt.
Landmark votes in the House and the Senate Armed Services Committee were expected to come as early as today.
Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Wednesday reiterated his support for the policy’s repeal.
“Personal opinion? I believe it’s time. I believe we need to change it,” Mullen told about 500 service members at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs after addressing graduating cadets at the nearby Air Force Academy.
