Metro State starting pitcher Christie Robinson was called for three illegal pitches in the first inning, and the Roadrunners were called for 20 illegal pitches total Thursday, and Angelo (Texas) State defeated Metro 10-3 in a first-round game of the NCAA Division II softball championships in St. Joseph, Mo.

Robinson was pulled in the second inning, and reliever Brittany Moss was also called for three balks the rest of the game. “No comment,” Metro State coach Jen Fisher said when asked about the repeated balks. Third baseman Tara Mickelson had a two-run home run for Metro, which plays Wayne State (Mich.) on Saturday in the loser’s bracket.

Denver to host lacrosse world championships.

The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) said Thursday that Denver will host the 2014 FIL Men’s World Championship. The championship games will be held at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City from July 10-19.

“U.S. Lacrosse is looking forward to hosting the 2014 World Championship in Denver,” U.S. Lacrosse president Steve Stenersen said. “The rapid growth of the sport, especially in the Midwest and West, was a factor in selecting Denver as the host city. There has never been a major international lacrosse competition held away from the East Coast.”

Pioneers lacrosse duo honored.

The U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association named University of Denver senior Dillon Roy and sophomore Alex Demopoulos to its honorable mention All-America team.

Roy led DU with 82 groundballs and caused 31 turnovers. Demopoulos led the Pioneers in points (60) and assists (24).

Eagles sign Hau brothers of Fort Collins.

The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League signed A.J. and Chris Hau, brothers from Fort Collins who have advanced through the Northern Colorado Youth Hockey and Colorado State University club hockey programs. The Haus are the second set of brothers to sign with Colorado after Andrew and Alex Penner played for the Eagles in 2009-10.
