Two of Colorado’s mountain highways should be open in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
The Colorado Department of Transportation opened Independence Pass between Leadville and Aspen on Thursday afternoon. The 12,095-foot-high pass is closed each winter because of harsh weather.
On Friday, state highway crews plan to open the Mount Evans highway. Colorado 5 runs from Echo Lake to the top of 14,264-foot-high Mount Evans. The highway will stay open through Labor Day.
