Dunlap previously was an assistant coach at Oregon and Arizona. He was a Nuggets assistant under George Karl for two seasons, from 2006-08, before leaving to join Lute Olson at Arizona. As coach at Metro State, he led the Roadrunners to two NCAA Division II titles, in 2000 and 2002.

Dunlap’s reputation as one of the best tacticians in college basketball has yet to propel him to a Division I head coaching job, despite rumors he was a leading candidate to replace Olson at Arizona in 2008.

IHL and CHL to merge into superleague.

The 60-year history of the International Hockey League is coming to an end as the IHL and the Central Hockey League issued a joint announcement saying the leagues have entered into a letter of intent to form a “AA” level superleague starting with the 2010-11 season — playing under the Central Hockey League title.

The announcement said the IHL’s identity will be maintained through “various aspects” that will be announced soon, and that officials from the two leagues will meet in the next week to work out “remaining material terms.”

The CHL had 15 teams, including the Loveland-based Colorado Eagles, operating in 2009-10, while the IHL had seven teams operating in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio the past season. The league drew over 900,000 fans.

IHL commissioner Dennis Hextall said the two leagues share a common goal of solidifying minor professional hockey, and the merger “will enable our teams to recruit the best young talent to join our league, with the potential of improving their game and moving up to the higher leagues.”

“Both leagues have worked hard to establish tremendous entertainment at a great value for their fans,” CHL commissioner Duane Lewis said, “and by combining our resources we believe we can strengthen those efforts providing greater fan interest as well as a stronger brand.”

Divisional alignments and a schedule will be worked out at the IHL summer meeting starting Thursday in Gilbert, Ariz., and the CHL’s summer conference in Las Vegas starting June 21.
