Dave Grimes, a longtime teacher and football and track coach at Limon, died the past week from head injuries suffered earlier in the month.

Grimes, 51, a graduate of the school and employed with the district for 21 years, died a couple of weeks after being struck by a beam while installing carpet in a locker room at the town’s pool.

“It has been tough on an unsuspecting, tight-knit community,” Limon principal Chris Selle said.

The school will host a get-together for family and friends tonight at the track, including a video, then a funeral service in the gymnasium at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Gonzales honored.

Marco Gonzales, who was the winning pitching in four consecutive Class 5A championship games for Rocky Mountain in Fort Collins, has been named Colorado’s Gatorade player of the year.

The left-hander was 11-0 in 2010 and batted .486 with seven home runs and 36 runs batted in.

He will play next year at Gonzaga.

Manfredi, Finch resign.

Two significant football coaching resignations: Tony Manfredi, after three decades heading 5A Overland in Aurora; and Aaron Finch, after six years as head coach at 3A Steamboat Springs.

Manfredi, whose teams won the 1993 6A championship and made two other big-school finals, oversaw 197 victories. Finch’s teams won 52 games and made the 2009 championship game.

Gifford plans to walk on at Arizona.

In recruiting, Chatfield two-way back Shaw Gifford will try to make the Arizona football roster as a walk-on, and Chatfield’s Greg Kelsic will play lacrosse at Delaware.
