A Boulder District Court judge today revoked bond for Stephanie Rochester, a mental health counselor accused of killing her 6-month-old son.
Judge Gwyneth Whalen revoked the $750,000 bond set for Rochester, 34, after her arrest Tuesday night.
Deputy District Attorney Adrian Van Nice told Whalen no bond is similarly given in similar capital cases.
Whalen said she “agrees with the people that this is not a bailable offense.”
The Superior resident and her husband, Lloyd Rochester IV, brought their unresponsive son, Rylan, to Avista Hospital in Louisville, where he was declared dead.
Details of the baby’s injuries and the cause of death have not been released.
Rochester was in court for her first hearing on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.
She is on suicide watch at the Boulder County Jail. She was dressed in a blue restraining smock and was handcuffed and shackled for the hearing.
Rochester cried, sniffled and wiped her eyes as she sat waiting for the hearing to begin.
Her husband didn’t attend. Two women who said they were members of her family were in the courtoorm. Both refused to comment to the media.
She is due back in court Monday when she will be formally charged.
