A Federal Heights man was awakened early this morning by an armed intruder who fatally shot him after a confrontation.
The incident happened at about 1:30 a.m. on the 2500 block of West 91st Drive, said Lt. Gary Toldness of the Federal Heights Police Department.
Toldness said a man who had been visiting the home was leaving and was in his car when another car with three men inside pulled up.
A man in the front passenger seat, armed with a rifle, got out of the car and held up the man who was trying to leave. The gunman demanded a car stereo from the robbery victim and then forced the victim to take him back into the home he had just left.
Once inside the home, the gunman and robbery victim awakened a 24-year-old resident, Toldness said. A confrontation ensued and the resident was shot multiple times.
The gunman left the home and fled with the driver and the rear seat passenger, who had been waiting outside.
The man who had been confronted in his car in front of the home was not injured.
Police said all three suspects were dressed in black clothing, with black hoodies and black bandanas. All three men had their faces covered during the incident.
The suspects were in a gold or light brown sedan, possibly a Dodge Intrepid, Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Sebring or other similar car, Toldness said.
Police investigators are combing through the home this afternoon to gather evidence.
Investigators believe the gunman used a “small caliber” rifle, Toldness said.
The name of the victim, who was shot multiple times, has not been released. He died at the scene.
Anyone with information on the shooting or on possible suspects is asked to call Federal Heights police at 303 428-8538.
