TELLURIDE — Activists are asking this southwest Colorado resort town to require grocery stores to charge customers 25 cents for each single-use plastic bag.

Town Council members reacted favorably to the idea at a recent work session and directed town staff to draft an ordinance.

Bob Harnish, general manager of the Village Market grocery store, said the ordinance would create an unfair burden on food stores. He said a recycling program is a better idea.
