BOULDER, Colo.—A 34-year-old Superior woman suspected of killing her 6-month-old son has been charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

Stephanie Rochester was charged in Boulder County District Court Monday. Another hearing is scheduled June 24 and a preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 8.

Rochester was arrested last week after she and her husband took their son to the hospital.

An arrest affidavit released Monday said Rochester told a police detective at the hospital that she feared her son had autism and tried to smother him with a plastic bag before putting blankets over his head. The affidavit says she had complained of depression.

Rochester is being held on suicide watch. A judge revoked her $750,000 bail last week.
