“Shutter Island”
*** | Federal marshals Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are sucked into mysteries real — and then some — at a hospital for the “criminally insane.” There’s no shortage of paranoia in Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s psychological chiller. But the film is wan on emotion, given the trauma of the patients and DiCaprio’s Teddy. Ben Kingsley, Patricia Clarkson and Michelle Williams also star. R. 2 hours, 38 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Seventh Season”
*** | “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David and his dysfunctional cast of friends and family return in the seventh season of HBO’s Emmy-draped improv sitcom. The season’s story arc concerns the hotly anticipated “Seinfeld” reunion, which brings back that show’s principals and some tantalizingly detailed, faithfully re-created sets. In typical “Curb” style, however, it is metahumor commentary on the pitfalls inherent in reunion shows — though we find a lot of genuine laughs through David’s modern-day comedy of manners. 10 episodes on two discs, 320 minutes. John Wenzel
“From Paris With Love”
** | John Travolta shaved his head, dyed his goatee and gave himself and his stunt double a helluva workout in this gonzo spy shoot-em-up. It’s basically a bloody buddy picture that tries too hard. Travolta is Charlie Wax, a loose cannon shipped to Paris for a mission. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is Reece, his in-country American embassy handler and driver, a functionary who longs to move up the espionage ranks. When he hooks up with Wax, his wish becomes his nightmare. R. 1 hour, 44 minutes. Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel
