Getting your player ready...

Colorado men’s basketball coach Tad Boyle completed his staff Monday by hiring Rodney Billups, the younger brother of Nuggets guard and former CU star Chauncey Billups. He will be the Buffaloes’ director of basketball operations.

Rodney Billups played basketball for the University of Denver, averaging 10.2 points, 6.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds as a senior in the 2004-05 season. He earned third-team all-Sun Belt Conference mention that season after topping the league in assists.

“I always wanted to be a Buff, ever since I saw the love and respect that everybody in Boulder showed Chauncey,” Rodney said. “Chauncey is stoked about this. He wants to coach one day. Maybe I’ll hire him.”

Vinson, who will be eligible for the 2010 season, has two years of eligibility and could help fortify a CSU position depleted by attrition. After one year at Saddleback, the 6-foot, 175-pound Vinson signed with Boise State. He never played for the Broncos and, feeling it was not the right fit, returned last year to Saddleback.

Mullen hires Hays.

Hays resigned last month as the Metro State men’s coach after compiling a 98-27 record in four seasons with the Roadrunners. He had a 58-78 record in five seasons as Colorado Christian’s coach.

Hays will teach physical education at Mullen. He replaces Porter Cutrell, who coached the Mustangs for 14 years, won two Class 5A championships and compiled a 234-107 record. Neil H. Devlin, The Denver Post
