Elizabeth is rodeo royalty? Believe it.

Last weekend’s Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo enjoyed its 23rd year as a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned event.

Festivities included a parade in downtown Elizabeth. Daily rodeos at Casey Jones Park included professional bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping competition and mutton bustin’ — plus the coronation of, you guessed it, rodeo royalty. Great music, food and dancing added flavor to the weekend.

Elizabeth’s roots in rodeo stretch back 100 years, when area cowboys and ranchers put their chores aside and got together to compete for bragging rights at the site of the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo.

In 1952, the Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce put together the town’s first official rodeo. The annual Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo has been in action come June ever since.
