ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—Two people were rescued from a submerged vehicle that had plunged into a retention pond filled with about 5 feet of rainwater.

The rescue happened at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday south of Denver near U.S. 285 and Broadway. Firefighters arrived at the scene and found only the rear tires and bumper of the car visible.

Two firefighters dove in and pulled the victims out through the windows.

Paramedics resuscitated the victims and transported them to a hospital in critical condition.

The National Weather Service said storms that had moved into the state dropped about 1-3/4 inches of rain in Jefferson County west of the Denver metro area overnight Saturday. Storms also produced reports of funnel clouds and golf ball-size hail in parts of the state Friday.
