EVANS — An Evans man who rescued a 2-year-old from a burning home will be honored for his actions, but he says he isn’t the only hero.

Ben Llamas also credits the child’s aunt and his own son who heard the aunt scream for help and ran home to get his dad.

The fire started when the aunt, Artemisa Sanchez, 15, was cooking dinner and grease burst into flames. The child had locked the bedroom door, so Sanchez used her fists to try and break the window. Nine-year-old Cruz Llamas was playing outside, heard her scream, and got his dad, who works at night and was sleeping.

Llamas raced into the burning house, kicked open the bedroom door and rescued the child.

“God puts us in the places he wants us to be,” he said. “I think that’s why I was there,” he said.

It all happened a few weeks ago, and the Evans Fire Department plans to give special recognition to Ben Llamas.

“It was a very brave thing to do. But we don’t really advise people to run into burning buildings,” said Assistant Fire Chief Rob Standen.
