For longtime Angeleno basketball fans, nothing says Boston Celtics loathing like the 1984 Finals, and nobody epitomized that series more than Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell. The feeling is mutual. “There was a time, if I saw a Laker on fire and I was holding a glass of water, I’d drink the water,” said Maxwell, a current Celtics broadcaster who 26 years ago was fearless enough to promise he would carry his team to a title in Game 7. “There was a time I couldn’t say the name ‘Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’ without throwing up,” said Maxwell, who had 24 points and eight rebounds in the series-clinching win.
